A long-term investment for sustainable development

Gwynt y Môr Fund

Gwynt y Môr community fund is an exciting opportunity to make a long term impact on the sustainable development of North Wales. Over the lifetime of the project (which we expect to be up to 25 year), it will invest over £19 million into projects across North Wales.

The highly flexible fund focuses on the themes of:

  • Building strong and sustainable communities;
  • Developing prosperous communities with strong economic growth;
  • Reducing poverty and inequality in communities.
Gwynt y Môr Community Fund

The fund is administered by Community & Voluntary Support Conwy (CVSC) in co-operation with Denbighshire and Flintshire councils for voluntary services. Full details about the fund criteria, the area of benefit, application process and who has received funds so far, can be found here.

In addition to the community fund, a one off tourism fund of £690,000 was delivered during construction of the project.

The tourism fund has:

  • Helped to make major improvements to the Victorian pier at Llandudno so cruise liners such as the Waverly can once again dock in the town.
  • Supported replacement of the slipway onto Llandudno Beach to enable National Championships to be hosted and small life boats to be launched.
  • Contributed to the re-development of Rhyl Harbour. GyM also provided practical support, by providing a specialist vessel to help.
  • Kick started the Green Links Project to promote walking and cycling opportunities, nature reserves and other attractions between Llandudno and Prestatyn. Find out more about the Green Links project here: www.greenlinks.org.uk
  • Backed Rhyl’s attempt to win blue flag status for its beach.

Partnership with the RNLI

As part of the Community Fund Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm has awarded a £570,000 donation to the RNLI in North Wales. This funding package has supported a new rescue support vehicle based at St Asaph which can be deployed to incidents across the region and further afield when required. The vehicle has already proven to be invaluable during flooding in Cumbria, December 2015. The vehicle was called upon by the RNLI’s Flood Rescue Team to assist those communities and families in need with over 200 people being evacuated.

Gwynt y Môr recognises that training turns volunteers into lifesavers. The funding package is also supporting training for all the volunteer crews along the North Wales Coast for the next five years at the Llandudno, Conwy, Rhyl and Flint lifeboat stations.
