State-of-the-art technology and efficiency

Staythorpe is a gas-fired combined-cycle gas turbine power plant that began commercial operation towards the end of 2010. It has a gross capacity up to 1,850MW – enough to cover the energy needs of around 2.8 million homes. 

Staythorpe has been designed and built using state-of-the-art technologies. This will lead to a reduction in average annual CO₂ emissions by up to 7.5 million tonnes compared to an existing coal-fired power station with the same capacity. Staythorpe has an extremely high efficiency of over 58%. These key figures make the plant one of the largest and most efficient of its type in Europe. 

Our site at Staythorpe in Nottinghamshire previously housed two coal-fired power plants. Construction of the new gas-fired plant began in 1998, but was put on hold two years later. In 2007, the construction work recommenced.
