On Friday 13 December 2019, Aberthaw Power Station desynchronized from the power network. This historic moment marked the last generation of our remaining coal-fired power station, with no plans to generate electricity again before full closure on 31 March.

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the teams on the ground at Aberthaw for their hard work so far, and as they perform the critical role of preparing the plant to hand over to the decommissioning team at the end of March.”

On 1 August 2019, we announced that RWE had taken the decision to close the 1,560MW Aberthaw B coal fired power station.

The full closure of Aberthaw next year, will be another symbol of the changing shape of power generation in the UK. A small team have been appointed to support the station during the decommissioning phase that will begin following station closure. It has been clear for some time that the market conditions for coal-fired power generation in the UK have been challenging. With our flexible gas plant and diverse portfolio of renewables, RWE will remain an important player in the UK energy.
