Alwen Forest

Exploring the potential for renewable energy at Alwen Forest

RWE was successful in the Alwen tender in 2017 – an exercise run by Natural Resources Wales and Dwr Cymru for an option to develop a renewable energy project in the Alwen Forest in North Wales. RWE is working with Community Energy Wales to develop this project which is located mainly in Conwy County Borough Council adjacent to Llyn Brenig and the Alwen Reservoir within working forestry managed by Natural Resources Wales.

Based on early stage desktop and site investigations, RWE has prepared an environmental impact assessment (EIA) Scoping Report and received an ‘EIA Scoping Direction’ from the Welsh Ministers. This sets out the information to be provided in the environmental statement which would accompany any potential future planning application. The Scoping Direction informs the on and off-site surveys required which are ongoing and influences the wind farm design. RWE held informal public consultation on the proposed wind farm in 2020 and is planning a second round of formal consultation.
