RWE was successful in the Alwen tender in 2017 – an exercise run by Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water for an option to develop a renewable energy project in the Alwen Forest in North Wales.

RWE is working with Community Energy Wales to develop a shared ownership scheme for this project which is located in both Conwy County Borough Council and Denbighshire County Council, adjacent to Llyn Brenig and the Alwen Reservoir, within a working forestry managed by Natural Resources Wales on land owned by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.

The proposal is for an up to nine turbine wind farm with a maximum tip height of up to 200m, a grid connection and a battery energy storage system. Depending on the final turbine selected, the potential electricity generated would be the equivalent to the needs of up to 63,500** UK homes.

Since launching its proposals, RWE has worked closely with the community and undertaken extensive consultation. This included an informal consultation in January 2020. We’ve also carried out extensive assessments and surveys at the site, held discussions with interested parties, conducted an informal public consultation and gathered a huge amount of valuable information.

Status: In development

We conducted the statutory formal Pre-application Consultation on our plans for Alwen Forest Wind Farm and Grid Connection from 13 December 2023 to 7 February 2024.

During the consultation we held two public drop-in exhibitions where members of the public were able to view the planning documents, speak to the team and provide feedback.

The team are reviewing all of the feedback received during the consultation and will submit the planning application in the coming months.

Although the consultation is closed, all of the planning documents which we consulted on are still available to view
