Since the closure of its last coal-fired power station in the UK in March 2020 (Aberthaw), RWE has continued to provide firm, flexible thermal gas-fired generation with around 7,000 MW of modern and efficient operational capacity, including at the state-of-the-art Kings Lynn CCGT. In 2021 RWE generated around 15% of all electricity in the UK.

Ensuring the transition to zero carbon economy
Gas-fired power stations are the logical partner for renewable energy, as a bridge technology in order to ensure the transition to a zero carbon economy is accelerated whilst ensuring security of electricity supply.
Emissions from RWE’s gas-fired stations will dramatically decrease in the coming years, and in the future we expect that gas will also be de-carbonised through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCUS) and/or hydrogen.
